Dr. Sears...America's Pediatrician

I just got back from Memphis, and had the opportunity to meet Dr. Bill Sears (America's pediatrician) and speak with him about Brody's food allergies.

I wanted to see what his opinion was about giving Brody soy milk, since he is allergic to regular milk.

I asked him specifically about the isoflavones in soy (genistein and daidzein) that are similar to the hormone estrogen (which made me concerned to give this to Brody). He told me, "it is a myth" and he felt soy milk would be better for Brody than the rice milk I have been giving him (as I am starting to wean him). He mentioned that the Rice Milk had too much sugar to use solely as a supplementation for milk.

Someone on Ask Dr Sears had a question regarding giving soy to infants/toddlers and this is what Dr. Jim (Dr. Bill Sears' son, who is on the TV show The Doctors) said.

I guess everything in moderation. Too much of anything is not good..(except fruits and veggies :).

I was so excited to be able to talk to him for a few minutes. He was soft spoken and seemed genuinely concerned with what I was speaking to him about. I am jealous of the mom's who get to have him as their pediatrician :)

  1. I would also try Coconut Milk (as long as he isn't allergic). It is higher in fat. But, I would def. limit the soy (even though it is his opinion and probably true, there is SO much debate about soy so it sounds like we just aren't sure about it yet) and try to mix in rice milk every now and then. Try to give him fats and calcium in other ways too (avacado, etc.) so he won't rely as much on the milk fat. Just my thoughts. :)

  2. I agree with you. I am just going to try to give him different "milks" and not just one.

  3. Aw, Rachel, you're so pretty (yes, that is my deep thought from your post)!

Interestingly, I am not allergic to dairy but lactose intolerant and I have similar reactions to soy. I can only have it in very limited quantities (definately not the milk).

    I <3 Dr. Sears, too!

  4. It was so great to meet you last night at the allergy support meeting!! I'm so envious that you got to meet Dr Sears! WOW! ...he's definitely one of my 'go to' resources online & in books. I have been going back & forth about soy (for the same reasons you were) since we've found out about g's cows milk intolerance. It's reassuring to hear his opinion! I agree "everything in moderation" though :)

I'm looking forward to diving into your blog every spare moment I have :) Thanks in advance for all the info!!

Hope to see you again soon!
